Not sure how to grow and cook delicious seasonal food… what plants are best suited to the Welsh climate… why your tomatoes never grow bigger than a marble… or what on earth to do with another courgette?
Never fear, food specialist Nerys Howell and gardener Alice Sidwell (Orchard Acre Market Garden) are here to help and answer your questions. The session will cover: alliums; brassicas and leaves; root vegetables and pumpkins; summer vegetables and fruit – mirroring the chapters of Nerys’ latest book, Harvest – Recipes from the Garden.
Nerys Howell is the owner of the food company Howell Food Consultancy, and she has many years of experience working in the food, drink and hospitality sector. She has travelled around the world to promote food and drink from Wales, and says, “I feel passionate about the fact that we need to look at what’s at its best at particular times of the year – produce tastes so much better when it’s enjoyed in the right season. Gardening brings the added benefit of being able to connect with the earth and nature, as well as being good for the body and the mind.”
Alice set up Orchard Acre Market Garden with her husband Jonny 4 years ago. They supply fresh seasonal produce grown using organic practices via a veg box scheme. They use a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, which connects the growers, land and customers at its heart. They also work with their local food bank, supplying them with fresh food when they can, using a sliding scale pricing system for their CSA to fund this.
